William Alderson papers, 1931-1964. 1931-1964.

The collection consists of coursework, notes, and thesis from Alderson's studies at the University of California at Berkeley, class lecture notes for Reed College courses, including Humanities 110, ephemera from his musical and dramatic performances, notes and publications on folklore, folksong materials, some correspondence, a script for a television learning course in which he participated, and wife's library school notes.

William Lewis Alderson was born in 1913 and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. He taught English at Reed College from 1943 until his death in 1963. His interests included folklore, folksongs, and Gilbert & Sullivan plays, in which he often acted. As a teenager, George Alderson visited his aunt, Lora Ives Kelts, a librarian at Oregon State College. Alderson attended Reed College and graduated in 1963 with a major in biology. Alderson worked in Washington, D.C. as a conservation activist and lobbyist for the Wilderness Society and Friends of the Earth.
